Sunderland gave some of their academy players a chance to impress on Tuesday against Carlisle, but it’s one of the first team regulars that’s got everyone talking.
The Black Cats enjoyed a solid start to life in League One, currently sitting third in the table with just one defeat.
There have been plenty of bumps in the road though, and lots of fans have criticised George Honeyman recently.
The 24-year-old was one of the few silver linings last season, but his form has dropped significantly since taking on the captain’s armband.
While plenty of fans have been unhappy with his recent performances, he was superb in Tuesday night’s EFL Trophy win.

Jack Ross’ side beat Carlisle 3-1 courtesy of goals from Benji Kimpioka, Ethan Robson and Honeyman, and the 24-year-old certainly silenced some of his critics.
The skipper took his goal with great aplomb, latching on to a wonderful pass from Adam Matthews and fooling the goalkeeper with a composed finish.
