West Ham United attempted to sign Unai Nunez from Athletic Bilbao but were foiled by his desire to stay at the Spanish club, per AS via Sport Witness.
What’s the word?
The Hammers were reportedly ready to pay the release clause in Nunez’s contract, which stands at €30m (£25.2m).

However, he instead opted to remain in Spain, despite conversations between the parties continuing into December.
Bayern Munich could subsequently swoop in to secure the defender in the summer transfer window.
Who on earth is that?!?! Can you name all of these obscure January signings?
A shame
Nunez would have brought some real steel to the Hammers backline.
He has made eight appearances in La Liga this season and, per WhoScored, he averages 1.1 tackles per game, 1.5 interceptions, and 5.3 clearances.
This is a defender who is strong in the tackle and also reads the game remarkably well.
The fact that Bayern are also interested should point to the fact that he is an exceptional talent – he has won one senior cap for Spain – and his staying at Bilbao has cost the Irons the signing of a defender.
Thus far this January, they have yet to strengthen their backline.
Meanwhile, a former West Ham striker wanted to return!
